Islamic Biomedical Ethics introduces students to basic Islamic ethics and fiqh for the field of research and practice in the medical and life sciences. The course offers an introduction into the contribution of Muslim scholars in the history of these sciences. It aims at exposing the student to the main sources and principles of Islamic law (al-mashaqqah, al-dharar) and the Objectives of Shariah as are relevant to their field. It attempts to equip them with problem solving skills to evaluate contemporary issues in the life sciences from an Islamic point of view.

 

Topics discussed include patient-doctor relations (doctor’s responsibilities and liability, informed consent, disclosing secrets), decisions at the beginning and end of life (medical examination before marriage, artificial insemination, abortion, brain death), organ transplantation, sex assignment surgery, genetic modification and cloning, contemporary medical ethics, the legal rule on medical treatment, and other chosen topics
