The course explores problems of EFL curriculum and teaching methods as they relate to specific language skills. Specifically, the course develops students’ awareness of recent developments in EFL teaching and learning focusing mainly on young learners’ acquisition of mother tongue and second language. Specifically, the course addresses the challenges encountered in teaching and learning specific language skills such as reading, writing, vocabulary, grammar, listening and speaking.  The course also tackles problems involved in the selection of audio-visual materials and language testing. To understand both the theoretical and practical aspects of teaching language skills, students are exposed to best practices through movies that address these skills and also through field visits to schools that showcase best practice.  The course also provides students with an opportunity to reflect on the experiences, write critical analyses and search for latest research on teaching of language skills. Additionally the course engages students in a semester-long project which enables them to collect data on the teaching of language skills in Omani classrooms.
